Church, which is called Saint Nicholos Church, is in Demre. Saint Nicholos carries out his bishopric service in this church, which was existing in advance. When Saint Nicholas, who increased to the sainthood level in Christian world, was died, his duneral was buried into sarcophagus, belonging to Late Roman period and placed into a middle abscissa in the south direction of this church. The church is a basilical structure with three abscissas, two narthexes and a courtyard. It is extended in 6th Century. Church is damaged substantially during Arabian invasions and robberies in 7th-9th Centuries. It is repaired by the order of emperor Constantine Monomachos (1042-1055) and his wife Zoe and surrounded with a wall in 11th Century. Sarcophagus of Saint Nicholas is broken and robbed by Italian merchants and his bones are received and carried to Bari city in Italy in 1087. The Church undergoes repair in 19th and 20th Centuries. It becomes famous due to its connection with Father Christmas since 1950.
